A new survey from UBS has shown that the French continue to work the least amount of hours per year in the world. Once again, the French have blown away the competition.

People work an average of 1,902 hours per year in the surveyed cities but they work much longer in Asian and Middle Eastern cities… People in Lyon and Paris, by contrast, spend the least amount of time at work according to the global comparison: 1,582 and 1,594 hours per year respectively.

Upon seeing this data, some might criticize the French for being lazy, but that misses the point completely. The real message here is that the French are likely some of the most productive people in the entire world.

After a surge of car sales drains the program’s funds, legislation is rushed through to provide additional money. The Senate still has to act.

Reporting from Washington and Los Angeles — The House today approved an additional $2 billion for the government’s “cash for clunkers” program, moving unusually quickly to replenish the program after overwhelming demand from consumers left the initiative in danger of shutting down because of lack of funds.

The 316-109 vote showed the strong bipartisan support for the program. The Senate could take up the bill next week. But supporters hope that cash for clunkers can continue to operate, knowing that additional money was in the pipeline.

When it comes to gas prices, most stations are branded — meaning the name of a major oil company hangs out front — and must buy gas from their proprietary company. They can’t shop around.

With a lock on sales, the oil companies charge each station a different price depending on various factors, such as the station’s competition and its location. That means a station might have to pay a lot more than one down the street, and that cost gets passed along to you.

Faced with such instability, Gainesville, Fla., resident Steven King plans ahead: “If I know I’m going out of town, I try not to buy gas, so I can fill up after I leave.” King says he can save 10 cents a gallon by purchasing gas on the road.
