College Students! Here’s The Card For You: Capital One Platinum for Students

Friday, August 15th, 2008

Young adults just starting out in the world, mainly college students, lack the credit needed to qualify for a regular credit card. Or worse yet, they are offered high interest credit cards with high credit limits and college students just aren’t ready for that kind of responsibility.

Well now, Capital One Platinum for Students is offering college students with little or no credit history to begin the foundation of establishing a safe and affordable line of credit. This is the perfect beginners card; sort of like a credit card with training wheels. The Capital One Platinum for Students allows them to build their credit without putting them into financial ruins before the age of 21.

They offer a 0% APR on all purchases up until the end of 2008, then the rate increases to 19.55% APR. There are no fees for transferring balances and no annual fee.

The great thing about this card is they make it safe for college students starting out with a credit line that is manageable so you won’t get in over your head. So many times a college student will get their first credit card with a high credit limit. Before they know it, they have maxed it out and have no way to pay it back. This happens all too often. With the Capital One Platinum for Students they limit your spending so you can start slow and build your credit right. And if your card ever gets lost or stolen, there is $0 liability. How safe is that? Students can’t go wrong with the Capitol One Platinum for Students and parents will have the peace of mind knowing they aren’t going to have to mortgage their house to cover over spending that regular credit cards might make happen.

Can a Credit card replace a bank account? It takes a special Credit Card, but it is indeed possible.

Friday, August 8th, 2008

Can a Credit card replace a bank Account?  It takes a special Credit Card, but it is indeed possible.

Kristine C. contacted us.  She and her husband are suffering the consequences of the snowball effect of her being laid off and his long illness.  They got behind with some bills and their credit and finances are in such a bad shape that they’ve seen all of their credit card accounts closed.  When their checking account was closed as well, they had to resort to check cashing services to cash the husband’s paycheck, and to to the Post Office to get money orders to pay their bills. But such a system is both time consuming and expensive.
Kristine C. was asking if we knew of a better way.  We didn’t.
But after some research, and emails to our network of friends and spotters (some of them are real cheapscapes and know all about money and how NOT to spend it), we got wind of a Credit Card that claims to be better than a bank account.

It’s the people at AccountNow, a pre-paid credit card that promises:

Credit Cards vs. Debit Cards for every day use.

Monday, August 4th, 2008

Once upon a time, in the era before Debit Cards, financial savvy people would charge every day items and periodic expenses on their credit cards, paying off the balance at the end of the month; taking advantage of the float, rewards, extra warranties, and consumer protection.

Then the banking industry had the brilliant idea of combining the function of the credit card with the function of the checking account, and the debit card, or check card, was born.

The idea was pretty simple: why write a check, when you can just swipe your check card?  And the check card looks like a credit card but works like your ATM card, swipe it, sign, and the amount is deducted from your checking account as if you wrote a check of some sort, with no reconciliation at the end of the month.

Simple enough, most consumers loved the idea, and it has spread so much that now it is virtually impossible to open a checking account and have a plain old fashioned ATM, 99% of the times, the de-facto standard is a check card.

Did you switch from charging everyday expenses like grocery, gasoline (or shall we call it liquid gold?), besides losing on the float, and missing out on potential rewards (Airline Miles, Reward Points, or Cash Back), there are a items that you might want to consider:

  1. Credit Hold: let’s say you go to the gas station to fill up your car, pay at the pump, and you pay by Check Card.  Chances are the system is going to ask you to swipe your check card before you start pumping.  Well two things happen in the background:  when you first swipe your card, the system asks for a credit authorization to your bank, and then once you are done pumping, the proper amount is charged to your checking account.  The problem is the original credit authorization or credit hold, takes a few business days to be released, and often it amounts to $ 75.  So if you spent $ 60 in gas, your available balance has been decreased by $ 135, and if you run a tight ship those $ 75 might make A LOT of difference, and if you were relying on that $ 75 to clear checks that you have issued it will trigger an overdraft, where banks often tackle overdraft fees in the $ 25-$35 range.  Did you know that?
  2. Maximum Liability For Unauthorized Use.  If your credit card is stolen or your account compromised in any way, you are liable for only the first $ 50.  It’s the law, says the Fair Credit Billing Act.  Not so for a Check Card.  Your Check Card doesn’t fall within the Credit Billing Act and it is regulated by the Electronic Funds Transfer Act, and your liability depends on many factors including how quickly you report the loss, how responsive your bank is; since these Check Cards and ATM cards might have unlimited liability under certain circumstances.
  3. Consumer Protection:  if you pay for a purchase by Credit Card, and then there’s a problem with the transaction, your duty is to try to solve the issue with the vendor, and if your efforts go nowhere, you can dispute the charge with the Credit Card issuer who will immediately remove the charge from your account, debit a chargeback to the vendor, which is a good deterrent in solving the issue.  Not so with a Check Card, or not always, some banks have extended similar protection to their Check Cards, be sure to read all the fine prints and to stay up to date with the updates to the Terms and Conditions of your Bank.

We hear of many people switching back to a credit card for every day use, often tallying up on a weekly basis their charges and sending one payment per week to their credit card in order to avoid overspending, which is now very easy since every major bank offers online banking with bill pay as part of their services.

Good credit cards for every day use are those credit cards that offer rewards in terms of Airline Miles, Reward Points, or Cash Back.

The credit game got you confused? Here’s a simple answer.

Thursday, July 24th, 2008

Are you confused by the noise about credit scores, credit reports, acronyms that sound scary?

We got you covered with a simple solution. At the end of the day, not matter how much Quantum Physics or Molecular Science you want to apply to credit reporting, all agencies and credit cards companies use 4 buckets: Excellent Credit, Good Credit, Average Credit, and Limited Credit.

Here’s how you know where you fit (you must answer YES to all qualifiers):

EXCELLENT CREDIT:

  • You’ve NEVER declared bankruptcy;
  • You’ve NEVER been more than 60 days late on a credit card, medical bill or loan payment;
  • You have a current loan or a credit card for at least 5 years;
  • You have a current credit card with a credit limit of at least $ 10,000.

GOOD CREDIT:

  • In the last 12 months you haven’t been more than 60 days late on a credit card, medical bill or loan payment;
  • You have a current loan or a credit card for at least 3 years;
  • You have a current credit card with a credit limit of at least $ 5,000.

AVERAGE CREDIT:

  • In the last 6 months you haven’t been more than 60 days late on a credit card, medical bill or loan payment;
  • You have a current credit card.

LIMITED CREDIT:

  • You have a credit score at the major credit reporting companies;
  • You are an authorized user on someone else’s card;
  • You don’t have a credit card, or if you do you’ve had it for less than 1 year.

The above simple guidelines are just that, guidelines. If uncertain where you fall, and you don’t want to deal with the complicated credit scoring system, apply with a credit card company that offers a full range of options like Bank of America.
