The credit game got you confused? Here’s a simple answer.

Thursday, July 24th, 2008

Are you confused by the noise about credit scores, credit reports, acronyms that sound scary?

We got you covered with a simple solution. At the end of the day, not matter how much Quantum Physics or Molecular Science you want to apply to credit reporting, all agencies and credit cards companies use 4 buckets: Excellent Credit, Good Credit, Average Credit, and Limited Credit.

Here’s how you know where you fit (you must answer YES to all qualifiers):

EXCELLENT CREDIT:

  • You’ve NEVER declared bankruptcy;
  • You’ve NEVER been more than 60 days late on a credit card, medical bill or loan payment;
  • You have a current loan or a credit card for at least 5 years;
  • You have a current credit card with a credit limit of at least $ 10,000.

GOOD CREDIT:

  • In the last 12 months you haven’t been more than 60 days late on a credit card, medical bill or loan payment;
  • You have a current loan or a credit card for at least 3 years;
  • You have a current credit card with a credit limit of at least $ 5,000.

AVERAGE CREDIT:

  • In the last 6 months you haven’t been more than 60 days late on a credit card, medical bill or loan payment;
  • You have a current credit card.

LIMITED CREDIT:

  • You have a credit score at the major credit reporting companies;
  • You are an authorized user on someone else’s card;
  • You don’t have a credit card, or if you do you’ve had it for less than 1 year.

The above simple guidelines are just that, guidelines. If uncertain where you fall, and you don’t want to deal with the complicated credit scoring system, apply with a credit card company that offers a full range of options like Bank of America.
